I have been approached by a young person in care. He is 16, but should be in year 11 at school – he hasn’t been to school for a couple of years.
He has been offered an apprenticeship position at a company and they have approached us to deliver the training.
Are we able to do this as he isn’t at school leaver age – even though he would be 16 on his start date?
Although it’s not quite as explicit as it used to be in the rules, there’s still this:
P68 To use funds in the employer’s apprenticeship service account or government-employer co-investment, the individual must:
P68.1 Start their apprenticeship after the last Friday in June of the academic year in which they have their 16th birthday.
so your prospective learner isn’t fundable until 26 June 2020, even though they’re already 16.
